About
Robotron: 2084 (often referred to simply as Robotron) is a 1982 twin-stick shooter arcade game developed by Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar of Vid Kidz and published by Williams Electronics. Set in the year 2084, the game takes place in a dystopian future where robots have risen up against humanity in a cybernetic revolt. Players must survive endless waves of enemies, rescue the last surviving humans, and achieve the highest score possible. Jarvis and DeMar drew inspiration from Nineteen Eighty-Four, Berzerk, and Space Invaders. They intentionally designed the game to create a sense of panic by overwhelming players with conflicting goals and attacks coming from all directions. The innovative dual-joystick control scheme gave players precise movement and aiming, while a variety of enemy types with distinct behaviors added depth and challenge. Following its successful arcade run, Robotron: 2084 was ported to several home platforms by Atari throughout the 1980s and has since appeared in numerous retro game compilations.
