About

Space Invaders is a 1978 shoot 'em up arcade game developed and published by Taito. It was released in Japan in July 1978 and later that year overseas through a partnership with Midway Manufacturing. The game is widely regarded as the first fixed shooter and the first video game to feature endless gameplay. Players control a horizontally moving laser cannon at the bottom of the screen, defending against waves of descending alien invaders. The goal is to destroy as many enemies as possible and survive for the highest score. Space Invaders is one of the most influential video games of all time. It helped launch the golden age of arcade video games and established Japan’s dominant global presence in the industry. The title inspired a generation of game designers and profoundly influenced countless games across multiple genres. Its 1980 port for the Atari 2600 dramatically increased console sales and became the first true "killer app" for home video game systems. The iconic pixelated alien design has become a lasting symbol of video games in popular culture. The game has spawned dozens of sequels and remakes, inspired numerous works of art and music, been widely parodied, and even prompted legislative efforts to regulate video game access.
